The Pyramid of Performance
The Pyramid of Performance is made up of
two main focuses, Corrective Focus and Exercise Focus. These two
focuses can be split into six steps.
Corrective Focus is comprised of: Foundation, Flexibility and
Stability.
Exercise Focus is comprised of: Strength, Power & Performance.
|
|
For training to be effective it is
important to conquer each stage of the pyramid in the following
order: FOCUS
1: CORRECTIVE FOCUS
Step 1 - Foundation
Foundation
is the combination of healthy muscles, joints and nerves. To have
a good foundation the body must show efficient movement patterns
with optimal posture. Without proper foundation the body cannot
function to its full potential. Muscle Therapy or Massage is a very
good way of re-establishing the correct foundation of the body.
Coupling this with corrective exercise will begin to relax, re-align
and strengthen the muscles throughout the body, therefore correcting
the body’s foundation.
Step 2 - Flexibility Flexibility
is defined as range of motion around a particular joint. If a joint
is restricted by an inflexible muscle the body will respond with
tightness, pain or even injury. Through stretching and massage the
range of motion and flexibility can be increased, resulting in a
reduction in tightness, pain and injury.
Step 3 - Stability Stability
is the body’s ability to withstand and respond to internal
and external forces. To have good stability one should maintain
an anatomically correct posture while these forces are being applied.
Loss of stabilisation in the function of muscles is associated with
pain and loss of reflexes. Training of instability will incorporate
the subconscious, conscious and reflex system and is ideally suited
to the use of “unstable” exercise. FOCUS
2: EXERCISE FOCUS
Step 4 - Strength
Strength is the body’s ability to produce force or to move
an object including itself. This is where most exercise prescription
begins. However, without competency in each of the three steps of
Focus 1, strength training can create injury to the individual.
It is only when Focus 1 is established that strength should be introduced.
When the training is applied incorrectly, inconsistently, or both,
the body will either not adapt at all, or it will adapt (or adjust)
in a negative way likely resulting in injury. Likewise if you train
strength consistently and correctly, the body will adapt in a positive
way.
Stage 5 - Power
Power is the production of strength at speed. Fast competitive sports
are considered as power activities; however, any activity (even
slow movements in popular resistance training) can be considered
power activities when executed at “real time” speed.
Therefore, the exercise must be consistent with the daily activity
for which they are to be used. Consequently exercise training should
be when the strength is produced at a consistent speed for which
they are used in ordinary or specific everyday activities.
Stage 6 - Performance
Generally a high level of performance is associated with athletes.
In actual fact, it is everything we do or aim to achieve. Each physical
task we do reflects our preparation. Therefore competency of each
stage of the pyramid is essential to assure performance is both
carried out safely and as effectively as possible. Combining each
of the preceding levels in the pyramid and training each stage to
its potential will ensure the body is both protected from injury,
correct in posture and maximised in efficiency throughout everyday
living and sporting activities.
